Regional IPM Center Competitive Accounts 2: Western IPM Center

This is the second in a series of four posts detailing how the Regional IPM Centers have distributed competitive grant funds.

Each IPM Center is funded with just under $1 million annually. Generally speaking about 20% of that goes to the host university in indirect charges, 40% covers core expenses including personnel and travel, and about 40% is spent on projects. The “project” 40% is most often distributed using a competitive process. Occasionally projects are funded through processes other than the annual grants competitions.

Information about Western IPM Center (WIPMC) funding is taken from the (national) interagency database of IPM projects found online at http://projects.ipm.gov/. Data goes back to 2004, the the first year for IPM Centers (as opposed to the Regional Pest Management Centers that existed from 2000 – 2003.) Project types are not explicit as such in the source database so for purposes of this discussion I am classifying project types as Working Groups (w), Special Projects (>$5,000) and Small Projects ($5,000 or less). Note these classifications are mine, based on titles and amount funded, and not those of WIPMC.

This table shows distribution of WIPMC projects:

Year type projects avg. $/project total $
2004 large 2 $12,598
  small 2 $5,000
  work group 6 $13,337
