Each workshop will educate personnel on mosquito identification, biology, ecology, control tactics, trap usage, surveillance, and mosquito control. Fire blight resistant pear released by USDA ARS

A new pear cultivar, ‘Gem’, has been released jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Oregon State University, Michigan State University and Clemson University. Gem is ideal for the fresh market, combining high yields with excellent appearance, fruit quality and long storage potential. The new cultivar is resistant to fire blight and isn’t prone to brown discoloration, called “superficial scald,” that affects some pear varieties.

On January 31, 2015, Dr. Jim McAfee passed away. Dr. McAfee retired from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in 2013. Jim was a great friend to many, a mentor to anyone who asked for advice and a scholar when it came to turf and weed management. Jim’s career spanned decades of service not just to Texas A&M where he graduated from, but he also worked for TrueGreen in TX and GA. If you had a turf problem, Jim was always willing to assist.

AFRI Food Security, Beginning Farmers & Ranchers RFAs open

NIFA has recently released two RFAs: AFRI Food Security and Beginning Farmers and Ranchers. For FY 2015, it is anticipated that approximately $16.8 million will be made available to support new awards within the Food Security Challenge Area of AFRI. Pesticide Web Apps Now Available from NPIC

The National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) has developed four mobile Web applications (apps) to help consumers and pesticide applicators quickly find pest control solutions, insect repellents, and other information on pesticides when they are on the go. The apps work within most smart phone and tablet browsers, making it easier for users to get this important information when they aren’t at a computer.
