The Associate Director/Field Research Coordinator contributes to the leadership of the IR-4 Program, Western Region and coordinates the associated Field Program. Responsible for providing continuing liaison with Cooperative Extension (CE) specialists and advisors, Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) researchers and others within the University of California. Work with designated liaison representatives in other states of the Western Region as well as state and federal agencies, including the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA), California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Western Integrated Pest Management Center, commodity groups, chemical registrants and others concerned with specialty crop pest management needs. The Associate Director/Field Research Coordinator provides for the identification of pest control needs not covered by existing registrations and arrange for the development, assembly and transfer of information to support such registrations including the funding of short-term research projects. Advise commodity groups and others on the registration process and facilitate the success of their proposed research. Responsible for providing technical guidance for conducting crop residue trials under US EPA guidance and Good Laboratory Practices(GLP). This position also oversees efficacy and crop safety trials for specialty crops for food and ornamental production. The efficacy and crop safety evaluations also include the use of Biopesticide products. Work as part of a management team which includes the Director/Laboratory Coordinator and the Quality Assurance Coordinator in administering the Western Region.
- MS degree in a field of science such as agriculture or biological science, preferably with specialties in entomology, plant pathology, pest control, agricultural chemistry, toxicology, integrated pest management or other related areas.
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC), and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) aspects of regulatory research.
- Knowledge and awareness of the controversial and sensitive nature of current and projected federal actions against existing pesticide registrations and the regulatory basis for such action.
- Experience in professional writing and presentation in some area of pest management or regulatory science.
- Knowledge of both chemical and non-chemical pest management strategies, with particular sensitivity to issues of safety and environmental quality.
- Experience in leadership and management of people, projects and budgets to set and meet goals and objectives.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of people on technical and often controversial pesticide issues to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Experience preparing budgets for ongoing programs and analyze or evaluate various alternatives.
- Experience in production agriculture or pest management in agricultural crops and familiarity with specialty crops.
- D. in a field of science such as agriculture or biological science, preferably with specialties in entomology, plant pathology, pest control, agricultural chemistry, toxicology or other related areas.
- Knowledge of federal and state legislation and regulations and practical experience in regulatory procedures related to pesticide registration and establishment of residue tolerances.
- Experience evaluating a wide range of research proposals and work with committees in determining appropriateness for funding and follow-up to project completion. Skills to evaluate project reports about program criteria.
