Whether your job involves integrated pest management, sustainability, organic choices or environmental responsibility, many of us are involved in selling ideas to the public. When those ideas involve changing behavior, often only a multiple-pronged approach will help plant the seed. But where do you start? What kinds of media will get through to the public? And how much does it cost?
In the following video, Denise Delaney from the City of Austin Watershed Protection Division shares how her department organized an outreach campaign on environmental responsibility for the public. Denise was one of five professionals from our Advisory Council who shared information about her organization. Denise shares the history of why they embarked on the outreach campaign, the types of resources and activities they had, and how different groups responded to the media. The campaign started as a way to raise awareness of the need to protect the watershed around Barton Springs.
The City of Austin’s educational campaign is ongoing and includes the typical handouts and brochures as well as TV advertising spots, booths at events, and workshops for professionals. For more information about the program, go to the Grow Green website.
