Professor of Entomology: Mosquito Transmission of Biosafety Level 3 Arboviruses

As part of Penn State`s continuing dedication to develop excellence in the area of infectious disease dynamics, and to make use of our new state-of-the-art BSL3 level facility, we seek to strengthen the Department of Entomology with a scientist whose program is focused on arthropods and vertebrate diseases.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will focus on the role of mosquito vectors in the transmission of viruses using experimental, quantitative genetic, genomic and experimental evolution approaches. Candidates addressing virus infection dynamics and transmission and/or mechanism of endosymbiont-mediated pathogen blocking and evolution of resistance are preferred.

Participation in instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels is expected as well as mentoring of graduate students. Additional responsibilities include engagement in appropriate interdisciplinary activities within and outside the Department, including the Huck Institutes in Life sciences and the Center for Molecular Immunology and Infectious Diseases and/or the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. The successful faculty member will be expected to secure extramural funding to undertake a productive research program, employing Penn State’s Pell laboratory, which is a modern BSL-3 facility that features both insect and laboratory animal capabilities is available.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in entomology, ecology, biology, or related scientific discipline with demonstrated considerable accomplishments in research relevant arboviruses and mosquitoes. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required.
