The ornamental horticulture gardener plans and executes small-scale landscaping operations and maintains grounds in the City of Raleigh. This position operates in horticulturally-complex areas within a 35 property park district over 200 acres. Many are high-profile public landscapes intended to beautify, inspire, and provide exceptional experiences for the people of Raleigh. The preferred candidate will have a high skill level and substantial experience in garden maintenance and planting design. They will have the leadership abilities to direct others to complete landscape projects, and develop new initiatives with civic groups and volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
The candidate must have the ability to design, install, and efficiently maintain annuals, perennials, flowering bulbs, trees and shrubs. Some experience with turf maintenance is preferred, including fertilization, herbicide and appropriate cultural practices. Daily tasks include soil preparation, fertility management, herbicide applications using selective, post- and pre-emergent herbicides, weeding, pruning, and watering. The candidate will have a familiarity of basic landscape equipment, including trucks and trailers, mowers, and small equipment. The ideal candidate is organized, keeps good records, and is self-motivated. They have the ability to work independently or as a part of a team. They organize and lead volunteer groups, and advise garden clubs, civic groups, and individual citizens on gardening subjects. Additionally, this position will assist the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.

The gardener may supervise workers in supervisor’s absence.
Associate’s (2-year) college degree or equivalent. 4-year degree in relevant field preferred. Applicants may substitute additional relevant experience for the required education.
At least 5 years of relevant experience is required; 5-10 years of gardening experience preferred. Applicants may substitute additional relevant education for the required experience.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
Regular driver’s license required, pesticide applicators license required, Neuse river management certification preferred. NC Certified Plant Professional preferred. This position may require a commercial driver’s license.
Must have the ability to operate various maintenance equipment.
