Post‐Doctoral Scholar in Entomology

Position Location: Dept. of Entomology and Nematology, University of California-­‐Davis, Davis, CA.

Position Summary: This position is funded in part by a grant from the Specialty Crop Research Initiative. The scholar will determine current status of brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) on specialty crops in the Central Valley of California and develop and refine pest management programs appropriate for this invasive stink bug in this important agricultural production area. Pest biology, biological control, damage potential, sampling, and management will be among the areas of interest.   Continue reading

As Mid-South pigweeds continue to be stubborn and hard to control, methods to combat them are expanding. In mid-January, the University of Arkansas released a software package (http://bit.ly/2kBMIwn) to assist growers in making informed decisions managing Palmer amaranth.

“It’s a unique software tool in that you can select whether you have glyphosate resistance, ALS resistance, or PPO resistance,” says Jason Norsworthy, weed scientist.  “From there, you devise potential herbicide management strategies over a 10-year period. He will speak about his research on effective baiting techniques, and ineffective controls like total release foggers (bug bombs). Cockroach allergens have been linked to the development and increase in symptoms of allergies and asthma in cockroach sensitive individuals. You’ll learn how allergen levels can be significantly reduced with cockroach control alone, the most effective approach being gel bait treatments. Dr. Schal’s work shows how an integrated pest management (IPM) approach with intensive, targeted cockroach control can lead to both dramatic reductions in cockroaches and clinically significant declines in cockroach allergens. You’ll get the information you need to advocate for and implement an IPM approach to cockroach control. Continue reading
