Binational forum in El Paso to address Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases

WHAT:           Binational Forum: Emerging Mosquito-borne Infectious Diseases Along the U.S.-Mexico Border

WHEN:           June 13-14, 2017

WHERE:        El Paso Marriott, 1600 Airway Blvd, El Paso, Texas

WHO:             Federal, state and local public health executives and experts from the United States and Mexico will attend the forum convened by the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission. DSHS is helping organize the forum in partnership with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and the Mexico Ministry of Health to bring together public health decision makers from both sides of the border to strengthen long-standing relationships and explore new avenues for collaboration in the ongoing effort to protect communities from Zika.

BACKGROUND:       Texas and five border states in Mexico have experienced local mosquito transmission of Zika, and DSHS continues to expect local transmission will occur again this year in Texas. Continued collaboration in disease surveillance, mosquito control and communication among all border states will enhance the ability of public health officials to monitor the threat of Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases, respond quickly, and arm the public with the best information available.
