Full Time Integrated Pest Management Technician

Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Technician in the Horticulture Department. Primary responsibilities include assisting the IPM Specialist by scouting, diagnosing, treating, and training staff on plant health care issues across all areas of the conservatory, greenhouses, outdoor gardens and natural areas. This work requires a thorough understanding of horticultural practices, plant-pest interactions and control techniques. The successful applicant will have experience with application equipment including small tractors and bucket trucks, and will be able to assist with small engine maintenance.

USDA Invests in a More Diverse Agricultural Science Workforce

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced grants to increase women and minority representation in the agricultural science workforce. Funding is made through NIFA’s Women and Minorities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fields Program (WAMS).

“America’s human capital is our greatest resource,” said NIFA Director Sonny Ramaswamy. “NIFA investments are helping introduce more women and minorities to the agricultural sciences so they might contribute to future agricultural science innovations.”  Continue reading

APHIS Announces Schedule for Certifying Offshore Greenhouses That Will Ship Geranium Cuttings to the United States During the 2017-2018 Season

APHIS announced today that it will conduct annual certification visits in November and December to offshore facilities that wish to ship geranium (Pelargonium spp.) cuttings to the United States during the 2017-2018 season. During these visits, APHIS will confirm that the offshore facility meets or exceeds the “Minimum Sanitation Protocols for Offshore Geranium Cutting Production.”

APHIS must physically visit and certify all interested offshore facilities before December 31, 2017. Participating facilities must cover the full cost of these certification visits, including travel, salary, benefits, and overtime. The facilities will provide these funds through a trust fund established through a signed cooperative services agreement. Continue reading
