Biologist/Computer Scientist (Bioinformatician)

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), Science and Technology’s (S&T) Core Functional Area, Beltsville laboratory is a world reference for regulatory plant pathogen diagnostic development, validation, and deployment for the detection of many complex diseases and pathogens that threaten agriculture and native plants.  Additionally, it provides hands-on training as a mechanism of technology transfer to scientists within PPQ programs, the USDA, National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) National Plant Diagnostic Network, and other state and Federal diagnostic laboratories.

The work is in this position as an expert-level Biologist and/or Computer Scientist, with an emphasis in bioinformatics, provides expert leadership and direction for the laboratory and S&T in the development of bioinformatics analyses of phytopathogen genomes and pipeline development for regulatory purposes.

Salary Information:  First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lowest rate of the salary range for the grade selected.

APHIS is an emergency response agency. This means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS. For details click: APHIS Emergency Response
