Professor and Department Chair – Clemson University

Clemson University (CU) is seeking to fill a Professor and Department Chair position within their Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. The Chair provides vision and leadership to facilitate and strengthen our teaching, research, and extension missions. The person selected will promote and guide new initiatives in a large and diverse department. The position is located on the Clemson campus and will be a twelve-month, tenured appointment.

The Chair will represent the Department within the state, nationally, and internationally, will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the agricultural and environmental community, and will facilitate interdisciplinary and interagency cooperation. The Chair will engage with all stakeholders and provide direction and guidance around resource development and departmental goals. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, program planning and implementation, budget management, personnel recruitment and management, performance evaluations and reviews, coordinating promotion and tenure, and professional development of the faculty, staff, and students. The ability to manage budgets and assist faculty in obtaining gifts, grants, and contracts is expected. Promoting and enhancing the stature of the Department in teaching, research, and extension will be an important goal of the new chair.

The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement and educational excellence including teaching, proven ability to obtain extramural funding, and a forward-thinking strategic vision for all mission areas. The successful candidate must have earned a doctorate in an appropriate field, and currently hold or be immediately eligible for promotion to the rank of Professor. He/She should have demonstrated leadership and administrative abilities, appreciation for the diverse interests and missions of the Department, and a commitment to the land-grant philosophy. The successful candidate must have experience in graduate and undergraduate training and communication and mentoring skills that encourage faculty to achieve their highest potential.

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PES), part of the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS), provides unified education, research, and public service programs that address public needs in agronomy, entomology, environmental sciences, horticulture and turfgrass, plant pathology, and soil and water sciences. The Department is a result of a recent restructuring and was formed in 2016. It includes 45 faculty located on campus and at Research and Education Centers located in Charleston, Georgetown, Florence, and Blackville, SC. Three undergraduate degree programs (Plant and Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, and Turfgrass) and two graduate programs (M.S. and Ph.D. in both Plant and Environmental Sciences and Entomology) are managed in the Department. Resources available on and near the Clemson University campus include the Genomics and Computational Biology Laboratory, Clemson Light Imaging Facility, Electron Microscopy Facility, Greenhouses Complex, Musser Fruit Research Farm, Simpson Research Farm, Student Organic Farm, SC State Botanical Garden, 17,500-acre Clemson Experimental Forest, Cherry Farm Insectaries, and the Arthropod Collection. Facilities are available throughout the state and include five Research and Education Centers.
