USDA Announces $150.2 Million in Funding through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative

WASHINGTON, D.C. April 11, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced $150.2 million in available funding to support projects that build a foundation of knowledge in agricultural sciences to address a range of societal and global challenges such as food security, food safety, sustainable agriculture, and rural entrepreneurship. Final rule on AFRI with request for comments

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) of the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is soliciting comments on its final rule in respect to a revision of the general administrative guidelines applicable to the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grant program. The solicitation appeared in the Federal Register (81 FR 58809, Aug. 26).

USDA Announces $5.2 Million For Nanotechnology Research

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced an investment of more than $5.2 million to support nanotechnology research at 11 universities. The universities will research ways nanotechnology can be used to improve food safety, enhance renewable fuels, increase crop yields, manage agricultural pests, and more. The awards were made through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), the nation’s premier competitive, peer-reviewed grants program for fundamental and applied agricultural sciences. USDA Awards More Than $30 Million in Grants for Food Safety and Plant Health Improvements

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the award of $30.1 million in competitive grants to fund 80 research projects to improve food safety, reduce antibiotic resistance in food, and increase the resilience of plants in the face of climate change. The grants are made possible through USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), the nation’s premier competitive, peer-reviewed grants program for fundamental and applied agricultural sciences. Dr. John P. Holdren, President Obama’s Science and Technology Advisor and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, joined Secretary Vilsack to make the announcement. National team of scientists will study ways of fighting herbicide-resistant weeds

An interdisciplinary team of weed scientists, economists and sociologists are seeking effective ways to fight the growing problem of herbicide-resistant weeds.

With support from a USDA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative grant, the nationwide team is looking to gain a better understanding of the causes and consequences of herbicide resistant weeds and the strategies farmers use to cope with them. The project also addresses barriers farmers face in adopting more diverse strategies for herbicide-resistant weed management. Continue reading
