Online School IPM Curriculum Available—with educational credits

IPM professionals who need to boost their continuing education credits or work toward license renewal now have a way to get them without traveling long distances to attend an expensive workshop. Thanks to a new web-based school IPM course curriculum developed by Texas A&M AgriLife specialists, school IPM coordinators, animal control and code enforcement officers, and pest management professionals can get training and continuing education credits without ever leaving their desks.

“House Hunters” for ants

Have you ever wondered why ants build a nest right next to your mailbox? And when you trample on it, why they would dare to build another one just a foot away? A couple of researchers from Arizona State University did, and they discovered that ants choose their living spaces very similarly to the way humans do—by choosing whichever one has the qualities they liked in the previous one.

Got ants? Get S.E.R.I.O.U.S.

No one likes ants in the house, but there are ways of dealing with them without spraying. A new website, “Got Ants? Get S.E.R.I.O.U.S.” gives helpful hints on effective IPM for ants, from excluding them from the house to ways to get rid of them if they do come in.

Got Ants is a collaboration of public agencies, educational institutions, pest professionals, and nonprofits working to promote environmentally sound ant management and to protect water quality.

Scruffles the Mouse Teaches IPM

Want to teach school staff some simple IPM techniques in just a few short minutes? Orange County Public Schools, in conjunction with Orlando Tech Animation, created several video “shorts” on IPM topics. The videos, which feature a cute animated mouse named Scruffles, run from one to two minutes long and include IPM basics, bed bugs, head lice, ants, rodents and cockroaches. In addition to presenting useful IPM tips, Scruffles has a tongue-in-cheek charm. In the rodent video, he comments that as a mouse himself, “I have certain expertise in these matters.”
