NIFA recently awarded 16 applied research and development grants to enhance the development, adoption, and implementation of innovative, ecologically-based, sustainable integrated pest management (IPM), technologies, tools, tactics and strategies that address regional and/or national IPM priorities. Among the projects funded include are the use of photobiology and lighting technologies for suppression of powdery mildew in strawberry production, developing techniques for management of Sclerotinia stem rot on soybeans, optimizing lures to detect invasive wood-boring insects, supporting homeowner IPM programs, and variable precision planting for maximizing weed suppression and yield increases in row crop systems. These grants are a part of NIFA’s Crop Protection and Pest Management Program, which addresses integrated pest management solutions for emerging weed, disease, and insect pests. Continue reading →

The third annual IPM Online Conference hosted by the Northeastern IPM Center (NEIPMC) will feature updates from active projects funded by the NEIPMC’s Partnership Grants Program. In addition, the online conference will have updates from IPM-related projects funded through the Northeastern Sustainable Agriculture and Education (NE SARE) Program and USDA-NIFA’s Applied Research and Development Program (ARDP) and Extension Implementation Program (EIP).
The rapid style conference will feature 5 minute presentations in which the speakers will discuss, show, or possibly sing! about 1 or 2 highlights from their projects. The purpose of the conference is to increase collaboration and awareness about current IPM-related research and extension in the Northeast in a fun way. Continue reading →

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today awarded $9.4 million to support 25 research and outreach projects that will help mitigate pests, weeds and diseases on farms and in communities. The awards are made through NIFA’s Crop Protection and Pest Management Program (CPPM) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program which have awarded more than $64.5 million since 2014.
“NIFA is making investments to ensure America’s agriculture sector is able to rely on sound scientific approaches to increase production and ensure continued food security in the face of the many challenges including arthropod, weed and disease pests,” said NIFA Director Sonny Ramaswamy. “The Crop Protection and Pest Management Program has a history of developing new tools, best management practices and strategies for healthy crop systems while supporting communities with effective, affordable and environmentally sound solutions that reduce potential health risks.” Continue reading →

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced the availability of $4 million to support research and extension efforts to mitigate pest issues and increase crop protection practices for the agricultural community. This funding is made through the Crop Protection and Pest Management (CPPM) Program, administered by NIFA. Funding can be used to support projects that will address pest management efforts for both conventional and organic production systems. Funded projects may also develop reduced-risk methods for pest-free homes, schools, parks and recreational areas. Continue reading →

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is pleased to announce the release of the Crop Protection and Pest Management Program (CPPM) Request for Applications (RFA). NIFA is requesting applications only for the Applied Research and Development Program (ARDP) area of the CPPM program in this solicitation. NIFA has requested continuation applications for the CPPM Extension Implementation Program and the Regional Coordination Program in separate RFAs.
