USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture Announces Support for Education, Mentoring, and Technical Assistance Programs to Help New Farmers and Ranchers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced $17.7 million in available funding to support the delivery of education, mentoring, and technical assistance programs that help beginning farmers and ranchers in the U.S. and its territories. Funding is made through NIFA’s Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP), authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill.

Alabama Vegetable IPM program receives funding to help underserved farmers

Without a consistent commercial vegetable production education program for many years, Alabama was ranked at the bottom when it came to production levels in sustainable agriculture and organic small farms. Alabama small producers needed up-to-date pest management information and constant training for preventing significant yield losses. Early grants (since 2009) from the Organic Agriculture Research and Education Initiative, Extension IPM, and the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program helped specialists create an IPM educational campaign that they delivered to the entire state. Regional Extension Agents and County Extension Coordinators worked hard to organize training events, distribute training materials, and spread the word. With this solid start, Alabama is now on the path to increasing fruit and vegetable production on small farms. Impacts of the first five years of the IPM project have been tremendous. AFRI Food Security, Beginning Farmers & Ranchers RFAs open

NIFA has recently released two RFAs: AFRI Food Security and Beginning Farmers and Ranchers. For FY 2015, it is anticipated that approximately $16.8 million will be made available to support new awards within the Food Security Challenge Area of AFRI. In FY 2015, application are sought to support agricultural production research, education, and extension to develop more sustainable, productive, and economically viable plant and animal production systems.
