Let the March Madness BMSB Citizen Science Project Begin!

Project Description: Land grant university and USDA Entomologists are teaming up to determine the location and population density of a newly invasive insect, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Halyomorpha halys (BMSB) in the United States. ‘Updated map of BMSB in the US’

Establishment of more invasive species a concern for UGA experts

Over the next 10 years, the number of cargo containers operating out of the Port of Savannah, Georgia, is expected to double. While additional cargo means increased revenue for the state, Chuck Bargeron, associate director of the University of Georgia Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, is concerned it could also lead to the establishment of more invasive species.

The center has identified more than 2,900 different species of wildlife, plants and insects that are present in, but not native to, North America. Many of those species come from Asia, where the ships that deliver cargo to the Port of Savannah originate. Continue reading

Join the National March Madness Citizen Science Project to find the BMSB

University and USDA Entomologists are teaming up to map the location and population density of a newly invasive insect, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys. You can help us track and the insect in urban environments by joining the project to put BMSB on the map.

  • Representative elementary and middle schools in each of the 48 States are receiving this invitation to participate in the

 ‘March Madness Citizen Science Project to Find Stinky’ .

  • Students and parents interested in participating in the project will begin
    by taking an image of your BMSB.  Then send your image to EDDMaps
    . Once confirmed, report your findings daily.
  • Follow the guidelines on the BMSB Project website to get started.

UGA Extension agents use a variety of mobile apps to help farmers manage crops

Two days a week, University of Georgia researcher Michael Toews searches for and tests mobile apps on his smartphone and works on developing new mobile apps, all in an effort to help Georgia farmers manage their crops more efficiently.

Toews is a co-director at the UGA Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, or the Bugwood Network, located at the UGA campus in Tifton, Georgia. The center is staffed by faculty from the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Continue reading

EDDMapS Reporting System Makes a Good Weapon in the Fight Against Invasive Pests

Utah state agriculture officials are using a smartphone app connected to a University of Georgia mapping system to stop the spread of invasive species.

The system, called Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System (EDDMapS), is an online mapping system that documents the location of invasive species as they are reported. If the species is on a list of “species of concern,” experts in state and federal agencies verify the data before it is published on the system.
