Clean Plants for the Future of the Eastern Wine and Grape Industry: webinar series

Since 2008, National Clean Plant Network Centers have joined together to efficiently produce, maintain, and distribute healthy grapevine budwood to the industry.  These materials are starting to make their way to nurseries, and ultimately, to end-users.  This four-part webinar series will cover the process of producing and distributing virus-tested plant material, graft-transmissible diseases and their impact, New York State’s new testing and certification program, and New York nurseries’ investment in new motherblocks and propagation procedures. SARE has new fact sheet on sustainable pest management in greenhouses

Growers using greenhouses in which temperature, light and relative humidity are controlled have relied for many years on releases of natural enemies to manage aphids, thrips and two-spotted spider mites. However, many of the natural enemies used to manage these pests in heated structures are too sensitive to swings in air temperature and relative humidity to be used in cool structures such as minimally heated greenhouses and unheated high tunnels.

Venerable NY IPM Program On the Ropes

The New York IPM Program, one of the first state IPM programs and a model for many others, faces extinction. After three decades of impact developing crop protection methods and teaching farmers how to use them, enhancing  environmental protection, human health AND profitability, the program faces the budgetary axe of  Governor Paterson, whose new budget zeroes it out.
