New nematode resistant cotton helps yield

Root-knot nematode populations can vary significantly across a cotton field. Thus a farmer might not need root-knot-nematode protection on every square foot of cotton he grows.

He does want all of the cotton to yield, however, and that’s what Monsanto plant breeders were trying to achieve when they began preparing Deltapine 1454 NR B2RF and other root-knot-nematode resistant cotton varieties for release.

A Greener Way to Raise Cotton and Combat Nematodes

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists are using molecular tools to help cotton growers cut back on their use of pesticides in controlling one of their worst adversaries: the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). Worldwide, the soil pest costs growers up to 10 percent of their crop, and it’s a constant threat in the Southeastern United States, where it thrives in the sandy soils.
